Sundale Holidays

Sundale Holidays operates a holiday park in Wanaka, with two further South Island sites in development.

The Wanaka park provides cabin, converted caravan and camping accommodation within reach of the lake and the surrounding mountains. This business founded the group in 2025. It serves guests whose time is spent outdoors, so the accommodation is deliberately straightforward, well insulated and priced so that the cost of a good night’s sleep is not what prevents the trip.

The approach to the site follows a principle the architect Glenn Murcutt takes from an Aboriginal Australian proverb, “touch this earth lightly”. Cabins are prefabricated, allowing a unit to be lifted and relocated with little trace. Waste is processed on site through worm-based septic decomposition.

Sol Mate Ventures

Sourcing, design and cross border supply relationships.

Sol Mate Ventures is the sourcing arm of the group. It began with an oversupply of used caravans in the UK market set against a shortage of affordable holiday accommodation in the parts of New Zealand people most want to reach. Acquiring, shipping and converting them proved more efficient than commissioning new accommodation with short notice, and the first 30 units are operational in time for the peak season.

The business now operates across the United Kingdom, China and New Zealand, covering the design and prefabrication of cabins, and the modular components that go into them. The objective is not lower cost alone, but also to use eco-friendly materials and waste reduction systems, working in a way that is both commercially and environmentally viable.

Design and Stewardship Philosophy

01

Touch this earth lightly.

Our products are carefully designed to last and to be removed without trace, so a unit can be lifted and relocated at any time. None of our sites require substantial groundwork, and each is designed to be self sufficient in water and waste treatment.

02

Affordable by design.

Prefabrication and efficient production, helped by economies of scale, keep our accommodation accessible, so that the price of a comfortable night’s rest by the mountains or the sea is not what keeps people of all generations from the outdoors.

03

Designed and sourced with intent.

We design and source in New Zealand and around the world, drawing on a global background and applying both local and international sustainability and social enterprise principles to everything we do.

Our story

The name is intended to keep that in view.

In the twelfth book of the Odyssey, Odysseus is warned twice, by Circe and then by the prophet Tiresias, that he will come to an island where the cattle of the sun graze, and that if his crew leave the herd alone they may still reach home, but that if they touch it the ship and everyone aboard is lost. They land, the wind holds them there, the provisions run out, and while Odysseus is asleep the crew take the cattle. The ship is destroyed on the next crossing and he is the only one who survives.

It is among the oldest accounts we have of consuming the thing that was sustaining you, and it is a fair description of the relationship businesses can have with the places they depend on.

Helios comes from an architecture and residential development background in New Zealand going back some twenty years, and that is where our interest in how a structure meets the ground began. In 2025 we took on a holiday park in Wanaka and began reworking how the site was put together, using accommodations that sit on the land rather than in it. The trading business followed directly, as not all of what the site required could be obtained domestically at the right price or standard.
